I gleaned the following from an article written by a Motorola VP about digital technology as it is appplied to the sport of racing and how it is vastly superior to analog communications.

Racing has helped make the case for digital technology, proving that it can offer many useful features and capabilities that are unavailable in analog-based systems.

Digital technology provides more consistent voice quality over a wider coverage area. Hardware compliant to the Project 25 digital standard not only provides better range and consistent performance over a wider area, but also interoperability, and improved signaling and potential for high-speed applications, such as high-speed trains. Digital systems also deliver a level of communications privacy that is especially important to public-safety professionals working in emergency situations.
