I just came across your website today. It is truly excellent. I have been a SWL and collector of communications receivers for about 15 years, using Drake, Kenwood, Icom, Grundig, Sony and NRD. Unfortunately there is not, to the best of my knowledger, any site for SWLs that comes close to what you are doing and the professional fashion in which yours has been assembled.

Loved your site. I am currently working with a newly acquired Radio Shack PRO-95 handheld scanner. This is a very nifty little radio and has excellent performance and range for the price. I live in the basement area of our home and I still pick up many frequencies from distant counties even with the little "Duckie" antenna. I especially liked your antenna rating site and I found it accurate and informative. Antenna's are definately as important if not more important than the receiver itself, and since there are so many frequencies, many on a very high spectrum with extremely short overall range, a great antenna makes or breaks your receiving power. Great site! I will recommend it. Keep up the good work.

Into "Hobby Radio" since the '70's. Big Fed nut until scrambling took over. Most of my stuff is in boxes at the moment, waiting my retirement and move to the country, where I will put up a tower, and attach about ten antennas. I am a night owl in winter, listening to the other side of the planet on my R71A (modified) and ships at sea. Just using handheld scanners right now. Com'on retirement!

Hello from Japan. This site is GREAT! There is no serious scanner site in Japan even though Japan has many scanner manufactures. I have an AR8600mkII and IC-R2, they are fine pieces. And then, there is another one. I got my new scanner ... AOR AR16 ;-) It's bad reputation as you know, AOR, finally they brew out this defective radio with affordable, unbelievable low price (3000yen...less than $30/unit!) with no warranty, no service, no box & battery condition in Japan. Then bought it and I confirmed, your report is fairly right! With $30, this radio is not only real JUNK but also it's a good toy. Anyway, there is no serious scanner site in Japan even though Japan has many scanner manufactures. Your site is so useful and helpful for me. Thanks!

The antennas are great and service is excellent. Maybe it would help some of the listeners purchase a good antenna. Check it out and I think it would be worth putting a link on you already awesome page to assist people in search for an antenna. The adress to the site is www.scannerantennaspecialist.com. SW radio listening isn't just another hobby in the internet era. SW radio should never go off, no matter that new global communication-enabling technologies are coming on. SW radio is still the way to go!

Just a budding SW enthusiast. I was stationed in Germany in the middle 60's and learned to love what I heard on the radio from all over. I am just now wanting to take the time to "listen in" again for music from around the world as well as what is happening there. Our world is much more interconnected now and it just makes good sense to be paying attention to what is so available through the SW medium.

Richard I commend you on the excellent site you run and the information you give to fellow scanner "freaks" like myself. I too run a radio scanner page but when mine grows up it wants to be just like yours :-) It is sad to see the laws of scanning slowly changing for the worse in the U.S. Here in Australia we're just that little bit luckier I guess but for how long??? I recommend your page to my U.S visitors that email me with specific U.S related questions that I don't know, because you are the MAN! Cheers.

Great web site. Wish I had heard about it before I bought my first scanner. Some guy who I won't mention sold me a Trident aor-2500 used for 500.00 After I got the scanner which he misrepresented to me. I checked and found that they only sold for 500.00 new! I was able to get him to send me a 2027 to offset some of my loss since court would not have been cost efficient. Now that I have seen your site I will be more selective about the scanner I buy. I'm thinking about either a AR-3000 or the BC8500XLT. Thanks for your good work on researching the scanners for all of us. Al

    Hi Rich:
Just a note to thank you for your extensive web site, it is OUTSTANDING! The amount of time and work that goes into developing a site of this quality is considerable and I want you to know that I (and I am sure all other scanning enthusiasts) appreciate your efforts. I just read your review of the BC-895XLT and it helped me greatly in deciding which scanner to purchase. I will be ordering one tomorrow :)! Keep up the great job Rich.

Hello, I somehow found this site (I'm really new at this web thing) I live in the Philadelphia area and I'm a farily dedicated scanner listener. I mostly monitor the Fed's but do the usual local PD's and other public safety agencys. My setup includes a 2006, BC9000, RS2026, BC895 (new), and an FRG100 for SWL. Antennas include 460 & 900 YAGI's on a rotor. 155,167,415,500 Groundplanes and a Neveda1000 multiband. A 36' indoor Dipole pulls duty for the YAESU. Well enough ranting....I'll be sure to check into your site on a regular basis. Thanks, Dave

I really like to find sites like this. I just wish that there were more of them. It seems to me that scanner and radio hobbyist are a dying breed. I'm 26, and have always had an interest in radios, but I knew the first time when I used a scanner that I liked it very much and it became a hobby for me. That was about ten years ago and has become a big part of my spare time whether driving or whatever. Now when I find a site like this I feel that there are other people out there with the same interest that normally I can't just talk to just anyone about. Keep up the good job and keep our hobby alive.

Just bought the Welz 2000, to add to the AOR 8000 and Yupiter 9000. All thanks to your hard work and magnificent technical reviews. My current Welz 2000 is not as bad as the one you tested, but perhaps due to different band allocations in UK. Just how do you manage with the family and work plus the hobby? Thanks for a magnificent site Rich!!!

Best Scanner site I have found. Been coming here for 6 months now. Very informative with cutting edge news. I also like many viewers have been scanning 20 years..? I have worked with Fire and EMS for the past 20 years and my wife has been a 911 dispatcher for 12 years. I have owned 7 scanners and I am awaiting on the new Radio Shack Trunktracker mobile to start shipping. I check your sight weekly! I have really got involved in Computer interface with trunked scanning due to you pages. I am running a BC895XLT with Radio Manager. Excellent program! Thanks for making this possible!!

Rich - I have been involved in amateur radio for several years, and have recently become interested in scanning and monitoring. I have an HF base station at home that takes up a closet, and uses a 200 foot long wire antenna in my backyard. The nice thing about scanning is that you can take your radio with you wherever you go. Excellent site, and thank you for all your hard work to develop it. Regards, Jim W1XF

I decided to buy a radio scanner after some punk aimed a rifle to my window. To make a long story short, no shots were fired, he was caught very quickly and was so impressed with the the way our Toronto Police work and communicate with each other. I hope to become a police radio dispatcher in the future too. I also gave up 95% TV viewing, and hardly listen to the regular radio as well. Great web site! Highpoint 800 mhz and ID for each agncy. Am at this time trying to understand everything. I have too many ID s to fit in the 10 slots allowed for each bank. Highpoint has about 20 for the police alone. I am working on it and maybe it will come to me. The ID s seem to be the same as some on your page for police.--- Thanks for your page! Dave

Your site is a great resource for keeping current with this hobby of ours. Both of my handhelds (PRO-64 and PRO-90) are now equiped with antennas culled from your review (20-006 and W889). I stop in most days to check for the latest updates and scanner number 3 will surely be influenced by your reviews and first impressions.

By contacting your site regularly, I always get interesting news about what's going on in this hobby. And your reviews are simply mandatory to be read before buying any scanner. Even if they are not reporting "raw" figures about sensitivity, 3rd order intermodulation, image rejection, etc -often useless in the real world-, they give to any scanner enthusiast all the informations he needs to choose the right "toy" to play with and even more: the feeling to have that toy already in his hands! Thanks, Rich.
