I spoke to Uniden regarding this. The representative claimed that my non-whip antenna is "too powerful", resulting in the scanner's inability to work for trunking (but not conventional frequencies). Also, the reason the 895 works on the same antenna is that "it is a base unit, not a base/mobile unit".For the record, I tried the 780 on a third antenna (the weakest performer I have), and there was still no difference.
Since no one else is experiencing this problem, it's clearly isolated to this particular unit.
I may try adding an attenuator or buying a second unit (in the future), but I am considering this problem a fault with the unit, that unfortunately, is not considered a warranty related fault by Uniden.
