I signed on as a beta tester for TrunkStar780 but due to an unexpected increase in workload,I have not had the time to really do the beta testing justice. However, I have been able to make some very superficial observations concerning the graphics of this product in a direct comparison to WinScan780. I found both products work very nicely, both execellent in their ability to program the radio with your personal frequency listings, not causing me any lockup problems, etc. I also think the effort put into duplicating the front panel of the 780 and all of it's functions is admirable. But the TrunkStar780 program wins hands down in my book.
What I look for in a program is the ability to do what needs to be done more effeciently. To me that means quicker and easier. The WinScan program duplicates the keystrokes (steps) required to complete a function of the radio almost the same when done manually. TrunkStar has attempted to "gang" as many keystrokes as possible and show one icon on the display panel which reduces the amount of keystrokes per function. The graphics of the Trunkstar program are, in my opinion, more appealing also. Unlike WinScan, which merely duplicates the front radio panel, I can look at a less confusing, more impressive display. Besides, why have my programming show me a picture of the radio's front panel? I've got the real thing to look at anytime I want.
Of course, there is a lot more going on with both programs than just control panel graphics and keystrokes. But so far, without going into detail, I like the Signal Intellegence TrunkStar780 from Sam Dunham.
Of course the object of this op ed is to generate a healthy give and take on the two programs. An honest opinion expressed is a great learning tool and there are those who have explored both programs at greater length than I and have qualified opinions that I would like to see.
