I have done extensive testing to my 780 on the bench with IFR test equipment. In my view, .6 microvolt sinad sensitivity at 800MHz, which is what I have measured on two units, is nothing to write home about. The sensitvity on other bands I found to be good to excellent. From a 30 year veteran radio man's point of view, I must say I am dissappointed in the 800MHz sensitivity. However, reducing sensitivity is a well known method of improving selectivity specs. that the radio manufacturers, especially the major ones, have used for years. In essence, if it can't hear it, it can't respond to it. I do feel however that the excellent trunking software (which by the way works VERY WELL) more than offsets the degradation in 800MHz sensitivity.
After many years of working with both trunking and conventional operations, I must tell you that in my opinion, Uniden has achieved a major feat in the 780, especially for the price. It is necessarily complicated to program, especially without computer software, but that is a necessary evil of the mammoth capabilities of this unit. For anyone with the capability, I highly recommend Andy's Excel programming software. It makes the initial programming and maintenance programming a breeze. Besides, how can you argue with the price? My hat's off to Andy on a job well done. If you don't have his program, get it. It will improve your whole outlook on the 780.
