It might not be wise to be "hiking around" area 51 with a scanner! Reports advise of military personell patrolling there in vehicles and checking ALL activity picked up on the seismic monitors located liberally about the area.
A story I saw a few years back in a magazine told of a gent who did the same thing and was stopped, searched, and advised to "go elsewhere" with his radio, or the radio would be destroyed on the spot and he would be "answering to the authorities". I'm not trying to "rain on your parade" , but likely, any sensitive comms would be encrypted anyway, so such a journey might be disappointing.
...And no, ..I dont (and WOULDN'T) work for the govt. ! (<:
