IF you have a delay setting other than zero, the radio waits to see if there will be a response on the same talk group until the delay time expires. A radio has no other way of determining what was the last transmission in a conversation.

When the delay times out, or if you have the delay turned off, the radio jumps to the next trunked system. It knows the control channel frequency and goes right to it. However, it obviously must collect data from the control channel. Control channel data for Motorola systems is sent at 3600 Baud. It takes about 1 second to get all the data that may be sent. That's just the way the math works out. There's no way around having to wait for data to be received before the radio can decode it. No other radio will be any better.
