According to my documentation, the 245XLT also requires a null modem adapter for cloning. If you didn't use a separate null-modem adapter when cloning the 245s, is it possible that your nine-pin to nine-pin cable is cross-wired to act as a null modem adapter? If it is, you would not want to add another null-modem adapter in series with it. What worked for the 245s should work for the 780s as is, without adding any additional hardware. You might try again without the separate null-modem adapter.

If you also used a null-modem adapter for cloning the 245s (different from the one you are using now), then it would be fair game to suspect the current adapter. I've used the RS null-modem adapters for years with no problems, so I wouldn't suspect there is anything inherently wrong with their design. I suppose you could have a defective one, though.

You might also want to confirm that the remote settings are the same for both scanners (baud rate, etc.) Good luck!
