Here are the two most important things about antennas/reception. Antenna height and coax loss. You need to tell us how high the antenna is and how long the coax run is? If he is only listening to VHF and UHF, RG-8 MIGHT be OK. I would not use RG-58 unless the run is just a few feet. I wouldn't worry about the connectors at these freqs. We also need to know how far away the stations he is trying to monitor are?

He should try and get the antenna as high as possible. You might want to think about a low-loss coax such as Belden 9913F.

Give us some further info.
