I think for the type of activity you are most likely interested in, multiple radios is the way to go.
I have 2 radios that I use while mobile and its amazing how much more you hear.
I think Greg did a good job of explaining what the 780 will be doing in a multi-trunk scanning situation.
It may make sense to have a seperate radio specifically for just conventional scanning. Thats my 2 cents...
