Wayne, I would think about getting an 800 mHz yagi. Point it at the system. Make sure you are using low-loss coax. I never realized how important this was until I became a ham and started doing weak-signal stuff. The losses at 800 mHz are incredible. I would make sure my antenna was as close to my radio's position as possible and use the SHORTEST run of coax you can get away with. Use ONLY 9913F coax or something better. I am considering an 800 mHz commercial antenna with some gain for general monitoring around here. They are smaller, obviously, due to the frequency and don't weigh much at all. For 30 miles, I would go with the yagi though.
