Of course you can hear something on the 'reverse' or input
frequency. Think of the reverse frequency as being a simplex,
or direct frequency. If you can hear the unit on reverse, this
should tell you that they are close. If you can't hear anything
on the reverse, it just means that you're not within 'line-of
sight' of the unit. The repeater just catches it, repeats the
signal, and boosts the power a bit so that the transmission can
be heard on the output frequency.

It's pretty amazing. I didn't know this -- but after being
a radio amateur and experimenting why I can hear signals on the
repeater but not on the input, it really did confirm my
suspicion that it's based on line of sight, how much power the
unit is running among other factors.

Anyhow, Happy New Year -- and I'm waiting for my 780 ...
expected sometime on Tuesday, the 2nd!
